Getting Your Balcony or Terrace Garden Ready for the Monsoon Season

Monsoon is both a blessing and a challenge for balcony and terrace gardens. Plants love the rain, but too much water and wind can damage them.

Start by checking drainage. Make sure balcony or terrace drains are clear of soil, leaves and stones. Water should not pond around pots, or roots can rot.

Shift delicate or smaller plants to more sheltered spots—near walls, under a shade, or inside temporarily if rain is too harsh. Heavy winds can topple tall, narrow pots, so consider tying them or moving them.

Check pots and soil. If your mix is very heavy and retains too much water, think about adding better-draining components like cocopeat or perlite before the season.

Fertilising heavily just before heavy rains isn’t ideal; nutrients may simply wash away. Light feeding and then a stronger feed once rains settle often works better.

Keep an eye out for fungal issues and pests that love damp conditions. Good air circulation between plants reduces these problems.

Monsoon prep is about balance—enough rain for lush growth, not so much that your plants drown.
