Pet-Safe Plant Choices for Homes With Curious Cats and Dogs

Pets and plants look great together in photos, but in real homes, curious noses and teeth can get into trouble. Choosing pet-safe plants keeps everyone safer and calmer.

Many common houseplants are considered safer, like areca palms, parlour palms, spider plants, certain ferns, and some varieties of peperomia. They still shouldn’t be eaten like salad, but accidental nibbling is less risky.

Be more cautious with plants like lilies, dieffenbachia, some philodendrons, and certain decorative plants that can be toxic if chewed. If you already have them, place them out of reach or consider gifting them away.

Herbs like basil, mint, and rosemary can be good options on higher shelves or window sills—nice for cooking and usually less harmful if a leaf or two goes missing.

Watch your pet’s behaviour. Some animals ignore plants completely; others treat them like toys. Hanging planters, wall planters, or tall stands help if your pet loves to dig or chew.

If you’re unsure about a species, quickly look it up in trusted pet safety lists before bringing it home. A little research now avoids panic later.
