Mixing old and new furniture can create a rich, layered look—but it can also look mismatched if not handled thoughtfully.
Start with a unifying element. This could be colour, material, or style. For example, if your inherited cabinet is dark wood, try to echo that tone in a coffee table, photo frame, or lamp base so it doesn’t feel like the only odd piece.
Textiles tie things together. A well-chosen rug, cushions, or throws can connect a modern sofa and an antique chair through shared colours or patterns.
Don’t hide the old piece; highlight it. Use it as a focal point—maybe the vintage trunk becomes a coffee table, or the old dresser gets updated knobs and sits in a prominent spot.
Balance visual weight. If one side of the room has a heavy, ornate piece, keep other pieces on that side lighter in design so the room doesn’t feel too crowded.
Remember, contrast is part of the charm. The goal isn’t to make everything match, but to make it look like it belongs in the same story.
