If you live on the top floor, you know how much the roof affects your comfort. Dark, heat-absorbing surfaces turn your ceiling into a giant hot plate in summer.
Lighter roof colours—white, off-white, light grey—reflect more sunlight than dark ones. This means the slab absorbs less heat, which in turn reduces how much warmth seeps into your flat below.
Special cool roof coatings go a step further. These paints or membranes are designed to reflect more solar radiation and sometimes release absorbed heat faster. They can’t replace AC, but they often reduce how hard your cooling systems have to work.
The difference may not feel dramatic in one day, but across a season, a cooler roof can make top-floor living more bearable and slightly lower electricity bills.
Of course, proper waterproofing, insulation layers, and any terrace usage (tiles, planters, structures) all interact with roof colour. But when you’re planning roof work, it’s worth including heat reflection in the discussion, not just leak repair.
